The magic’s in the mix at SEJ. Attendees include professional journalists working for local, national and international outlets across digital, print and broadcast platforms. Freelancers are strongly represented, attending alongside staff writers, editors and producers.

SEJ conferences also draw academic researchers, environmental advocates, business and nonprofit leaders, philanthropic funders and newsmakers — from governors and senators to scientists and CEOs. Student journalists and community media are always part of the conversation, ensuring a wide range of perspectives and reporting priorities.

Scenes from SEJ’s 2025 Annual Conference

SEJ’s annual conference offers an unmatched blend of practical training, hands-on reporting experiences and deep access to national and regional experts. Participants gain new story ideas, sharpen their skills and build lasting professional networks.

The program features immersive field trips, data and investigative workshops and panels with scientists, community leaders, policymakers and award-winning journalists. Whether you’re a seasoned reporter or new to the beat, the conference strengthens your journalism and expands your understanding of the systems shaping our environment.

Why This Conference

SEJ’s membership reflects the evolving landscape of independent journalism. Freelance journalists who work part-time as storytellers for environmental nonprofits are now eligible to become associate members of SEJ, as long as journalism is their main occupation. Staffers for news outlets owned by environmental organizations may become active members if their publications are editorially independent.

SEJ updated its bylaws in 2025 to reflect the growing number of freelancers with mixed income streams and the crucial role nonprofit outlets play in producing independent environmental journalism. View full membership criteria →

What Past Attendees Say

Fantastic conversations with colleagues sparked by thought-provoking panels and plenaries. Connecting with editors and potential sources made this conference very meaty and one-stop shopping for all things environment.
Each year, I walk away from SEJ with new data tools and sources to help better inform my reporting. I learned a ton at this conference in terms of subject matter, but also was inspired to try new approaches.
I always leave this conference more motivated, feeling supported by a community that sees the world in a similar way to me.
